Episode 3: Diversity in Optometry

IUSO Conversation webinar Diversity in Optometry header

Optometry is one of the fastest growing health professions and that trend is expected to continue. Increasing racial diversity in optometry is an important step in servicing our communities and ensuring that everyone has access to excellent eye care. Minority graduates of IUSO have helped lead the profession in innovation, legislation, & patient care for decades, and will continue to do so in the future.

Join the IU School of Optometry for this important online Zoom conversation with former IU Vice President of Diversity, Equity and Multi-Cultural Affairs, Dr. Edwin Marshall, Private Practitioner and retired California State Senator, Dr. Ed Hernandez, and 4th year optometry student Claudia Hernandez, (no relation).

These leaders will share insight from their experience on why minority representation in the profession is important and how it can be cultivated. We will explore how diversity in the field lends to cultural competence and how it leads to better patient care. Many students from under-represented minority groups have called IU School of Optometry home over the years and led accomplished careers once they graduated. Learn about their journeys by attending our 3rd IU School of Optometry Conversation webinar.

Episode 4: Business of Optometry

Optometry is a healthcare field, but the practice of optometry is becoming a big business! As a profession, Optometry continues to see growth and expansion of practice opportunities, and a new culture of practice management is emerging. Learning to manage a practice, market to new populations, and balance financial challenges are critical for an O.D.’s future success. To prepare our students for these changes, the IUSO has partnered with the Kelley School of Business to offer a Business Management Certificate Program which provides a framework for students to pursue an MBA with Emphasis in the Business of Eye Care.

Listen in as the IUSO Conversations Series discusses the business acumen of an O.D., practice management, the Executive Certificate in the Business of EyeCare. Joining us for the conversation are:

Dr. Todd Peabody, OD, MBA
• IUSO alumnus Dr. Jacob Michael, the first student to earn the Business of EyeCare Certificate and current MBA student
• 3rd year IUSO student Noa Robson, completing the certificate this summer
