Eye Surgeons of Indiana Optometry Residency Program Mission and Goals
Mission
Develop an annual optometric residency program focused on ocular disease/refractive surgery with eventual accreditation under the guidelines of the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education (ACOE). Will plan to partner with Indiana University School of Optometry. Our program will help develop exceptional clinical skills and an extensive ocular disease knowledge base for an optometrist under the guidance of the doctors at Eye Surgeons of Indiana.

Program Goals
Goal 1: To identify a highly motivated graduate of optometry school looking to further develop their clinical skills and broaden their ocular disease knowledge base
Objective 1: We plan to partner with Indiana University School of Optometry and participate in the Optometry Residency Match (ORMatch). All program applicants must supply all required materials as requested by the National Matching Service and the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry.
Objective 2: Applicants invited to interview with Eye Surgeons of Indiana must interact with the residency director and all primary faculty members. Candidates will then be ranked on clinical skills, academic success, teachability, and integrity. Careful deliberations will be had between the residency director and the primary faculty to assure the best candidates are ranked highest and to avoid bias.
Objective 3: The program will be promoted and advertised on the Indiana University School of Optometry webpage, the Association of Schools and College of Optometry's webpage, and the Eye Surgeons of Indiana webpage. We plan to participate in at least one residency day fair a year that typically are held at one of the profession's annual meetings.
Goal 2: To expose the resident doctor to a broad spectrum of ocular diseases and anterior segment surgery cases so he/she will be prepared to triage/manage such cases independently in the future.
Objective 1: The resident doctor will work closely with all providers at Eye Surgeons of Indiana. Each provider will be able to provide instruction, guidance, and support to assist with the resident doctor mastering pathophysiology, skills to diagnose, and recommended treatment and management protocols of anterior and posterior segment diseases. Recommended treatment and management protocols will be based on evidence-based research, clinical trials, and protocols supported by the American Optometric Association, American Academy of Optometry, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
Objective 2: The resident doctor will be trained to evaluate and educate patients on what to expect for routine and complex cataract surgery cases. The resident will be required to observe several cataract surgery cases in our surgery centers during the first month of the program.
Objective 3: The resident doctor will be trained to evaluate and educate patients on what to expect when signing up for surgical cornea cases. Such surgical cases will include superficial keratectomy, lamellar keratectomy, pterygiectomy, corneal collagen cross-linking, endothelial keratoplasty, and penetrating keratoplasty. The resident doctor will become proficient in understanding the risks/benefits/alternatives of such surgical cases and how to manage them post-operatively.
Goal 3: To help the resident doctor develop the skills and confidence to discuss the various intraocular lens (IOL) implants used with cataract surgery.
Objective 1: The resident doctor will master the science, understand the optics, and the pros and cons of several types of intraocular lens (IOL) implants used with cataract surgery. The doctor will become proficient in making IOL recommendations to patients and identifying good candidates for refractive cataract surgery.
Objective 2: The resident doctor will be encouraged to stay abreast of clinical trials of new IOLs with the potential to make it to market.
Goal 4: To provide a curriculum that challenges the resident doctor through didactic work, case presentations, and journal discussions.
Objective 1: The resident doctor and an Eye Surgeons of Indiana faculty member will meet weekly for a period of 30-60 minutes. This didactic period will include educational presentations, ground rounds, and journal discussions. The discussions will include the resident doctor, faculty members, and 4th-year optometry student externs.
Objective 2: To develop the resident's public speaking skills by requiring regular presentations to Eye Surgeons of Indiana doctors and student externs.
Objective 3: The resident doctor will be required to develop one COPE-approved continuing education course during the year and present it at Eye Surgeons of Indiana-sponsored CE or outside seminar/conference.
Objective 4: The resident doctor will be expected to develop at least one publishable quality paper, case report, or poster during the year.
Goal 5: To develop the resident's teaching skills by providing the opportunity to preceptor 4th-year optometry students
Objective 1: We believe teaching promotes learning. The resident will be required to preceptor 4th year optometry externs one day a week after a reasonable amount of time of getting acclimated to the practice.
Objective 2: The resident doctor will develop confidence to instruct, guide, and promote learning in the clinic to 4th year optometry externs.
Objective 3: The resident doctor will be required to develop an educational presentation or ground rounds case and present to an Eye Surgeons of Indiana faculty member and 4th year optometry externs monthly.
Goal 6: To promote the interaction between resident doctor and eye care leaders by attending local, state, and national seminars and conferences.
Objective 1: The resident doctor will be required to be a member of and regularly attend meetings/seminars of the Central Indiana Optometric Society, Indiana Optometric Association, American Optometric Association, and American Academy of Optometry. The importance of collegiality will be emphasized to promote learning and engage the resident in thoughtful discussion to enhance patient clinical care.
Objective 2: Eye Surgeons of Indiana will provide a stipend for the resident doctor to cover professional membership fees, registration expenses, and travels costs.
