Zurich’s Eidgenössiche Technische Hochschule (as distinct from the University of Zurich) is one of the foremost international universities for technology and the natural sciences. Yet it is far from new, having been founded in 1855, in good time for Albert Einstein to be Professor of Theoretical Physics there from 1912 to 1914. He is one of an impressive 21 Nobel Prize winners from this research centre of excellence. Nowadays the main focus of ETH is research into the needs of society at home and abroad, and areas explored recently include the world food system, cities of the future, climate change, new materials and information processing.
The main focus of my film, accompanied by a driving beat and background Zurich traffic noise, is the Zurich Zentrum Campus, with its historic main building showing many classical architectural features. ETH is built on a hill, so the views over the city are great. Some of the 25,000 people who study and work at ETH are seen relaxing and socialising in the sun.
