Meteomatics Weather Drones for Atmospheric Research - ETH Zürich Case Study [QVh-IpEhHjs]

Clouds are one of the main elements that regulate Earth’s climate. Understanding cloud microphysics is thus paramount to more precise climate projections. In this story, we explain how ETH Zurich’s researchers are using Meteomatics’ Weather Drones – the so-called “Meteodrones” – to conduct cloud seeding experiments to study cloud-aerosol interactions and precipitation events. Meteodrones are specially developed drones that are used in weather data collection. They fly in the lowest layer of the earth's atmosphere, the so-called boundary layer. Equipped with special sensors, they can collect information about temperature, humidity and wind in the atmosphere. The collected data helps to significantly improve weather forecast models.
