We (Austin and Beccy Craig) are newlyweds living the first 90 days of our marriage using bitcoin. Our experiences will be featured in an upcoming documentary film: Life On Bitcoin.
After more than three weeks of searching and appointments, we found a grocery store to accept our bitcoins. It turns out, it was one of the first grocery stores we approached -Lolo's Fresh Food Warehouse in Provo, Utah. It just took considerable time to get it all arranged.
The associates were very friendly, even when a camera was in their face. They directed me to Mark Ridley, an executive with Ridley's Stores in Idaho (Lolo's is under their corporate umbrella), with whom I've since had a chance to speak a couple times, and he expressed a lot of support for our project.
Right now, we are on a trial run with LoLo's, using something of a charge card system. The first trip was limited to $50 USD worth of groceries. We use the card at the grocery story, so that none of the clerks need special training on how to accept bitcoin, and no new hardware is necessary to process the transaction. It works with their existing system, which I'm quickly learning will be critical to adoption. Then at the end of each month, we directly pay off the balance using bitcoin.
Lolo's is not yet ready to accept bitcoin from everyone, although they did express interest. This is a trial run, and Mark said they would be interested in expanding their acceptance of bitcoin and looking for options to integrate it more, so they can offer it to more of their customers. We will see.
The added bonus for us is that the charge card will also work at related stores. Ridley's is part of the same network. They have about 2 dozen stores spread out across four different states! AND they have an Ace Hardware in the Orem, Utah location, with another location about 30 minutes away that has a gas station attached!
