Biography

Dr. Anna Ablamowicz Tichenor received her OD from Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, TN and her PhD in Vision Science from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She serves as a clinical attending in the Dry Eye Clinic at Atwater Eye Care Center and is a clinician scientist in the Borish Center for Ophthalmic Research.

Dr. Tichenor’s research interests are in studying ocular surface diseases, such as dry eye disease, with a focus on how inflammation associated with dry eye impacts the mucins in the tear film and glycocalyx. Her PhD work enabled her to gain a better understanding of translational research, and she currently has an NIH K23 mentored award to investigate ocular mucins in dry eyes vs. healthy eyes. She uses laboratory techniques to answer clinical questions related to dry eye disease. Dr. Tichenor ultimately is interested in understanding the impact of inflammation on ocular mucins and understanding the glycobiological basis for dry eye disease.

Dr. Tichenor also conducts industry-sponsored research and has experience conducting clinical trials in the fields of dry eye disease and contact lenses. She has also been an investigator on several FDA trials evaluating new treatments for dry eye disease.  She has published articles in Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science, Cornea, and Molecular Vision. She has presented papers and posters at annual conferences such as the American Academy of Optometry and the annual Association of Research in Vision and Ophthalmology meetings.

Dr. Tichenor is a fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and a member of the Indiana Optometric Association, the Association of Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, and the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society.
